Sukhoi Company (JSC) is engaged in diversifying its production activities by branching out into the civil aircraft market. The company's most ambitious civil programme is the family of SSJ regional passenger airliners. In addition, Sukhoi Company is continuing development of a series of aerobatic aircraft such as Su-26, Su-29 and Su-31, the amphibian aeroplane Be-103, the Su-80 utility transport aircraft, and the agricultural Su-38L aircraft.
History
The history of Sukhoi company dates back October 1930, when aircraft designer Pavel Sukhoi led the team #4 of CAHI's AGOS aviation. It was at that point that the team of the future Design Bureau started to take shape.
Education Day of Sukhoi Design Bureau believed July 29, 1939 when under government resolution P.O. Sukhoi was appointed chief constructor. Together with the team of the Design Bureau, which had been given a standalone status, P.O. Sukhoi was relocated to production aircraft plant No 135 in Kharkov.
At that time the series output of multi-role short-range bomber BB-1 (after 1940 known as the Su-2) was mastered in that city. BB-1 was the first Sukhoi series aircraft. Its layout is set in front of Sukhoi Design Bureau central office.
In 1940 the staff of Sukhoi Design Bureau moved back to Moscow and its own productive capacity they received March 5, 1940, when on the base of DB-29 (st. Podlipki, Moscow region) was organized the plant of experimental aircraft construction – Plant of #289. P.O. Sukhoi appointed chief constructor of the plant.
In October 1941 Plant #289 was evacuated to Perm, and on return to Moscow in September 1943 it was arranged on the territory of the factory #464 in Tushino.
In 1946 Sukhoi Design Bureau moved into the building of DB Ermolaev, but manufacturing base remained in Tushino.
Within the period from 1939 to 1949 in Sukhoi Design Bureau there were developed and underwent tests more than one and a half dozen aircraft, but only Su-2 was series-produced in large numbers (910 planes) and in its short-range bomber and artillery recon/spotter versions took an active part in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945.
The five post-war years saw the Sukhoi Design Bureau develop and introduce the nation's first: booster aircraft control system; anding braking parachute; catapult ejection seat with telescopic trolley; jettisonable nose with pressurized cockpit.
In November 14, 1949 a government's resolution scrapped the Sukhoi Design Bureau, not to be resurrected till May 1953 as experimental-design bureau (EDB-1 MAP), when it was set up with new production facilities. Thus, in October 1953 the branch of the plant #155 MAP (former plant #51 MAP) was transmitted to EDB-1 MAP and on 15 January, 1954 EDB-1 MAP was appropriated designation – “The State Experimental Plant #51 MAP” (EDB-1 MAP).
Design Bureau got a new lease on life with the advent of supersonic jet aviation. That is why the design team's major projects at the initial stage were the supersonic fighters S-1 and T-3.
The S-1 provided a platform for the family of fighter-bombers, the Su-7 and Su-17, and more than 20 versions of them, with the Su-17 becoming the USSR's first aeroplane with a variable sweep wing.
The experimental T-3 became the platform for the first Soviet target interception air launched missile system Su-9-51 and the subsequent Su-11-8M and Su-15-98(M) systems.
In the 1960-s, the list of the equipment being developed by the Design Bureau became longer. In 1962 a project was launched to produce a long-range strike/recon aircraft, the T-4, the maiden flight of the prototype taking place on 22nd August 1972. This aircraft featured this country's first fly-by-wire system and automatic throttle control, with a weld-fabricated airframe of titanium and heavy-duty steel.
The year 1969 saw the maiden flight of the frontline Su-24 bomber with variable sweep wing, the first Soviet all-weather strike aircraft.
The Su-24 was mass produced in several versions. It is currently in the inventory of the Air Forces of the RF and a number of other countries. The year 1975 saw the maiden flight of the armoured Su-25 attack aircraft designed for destruction of battlefield targets.
The Su-25 was the nation's first mass-produced jet attack aircraft; it has several versions and is currently a key asset of RF combat aviation.
In 1969 the Design Bureau started development of a fourth-generation fighter, and in 1977, the prototype Su-27 fighter made its first flight. In the following years the Su-27 platform was used to produce the Su-27UB, Su-30, Su-32, Su-33 and Su-34.
In order to implement design solutions and master new materials and engineering processes, an experimental prototype aircraft the Su-47 (first flight in1997) was developed.
At the beginning of the 1990-s, the Sukhoi Design Bureau initiated work on civil projects. The year 2001 saw the first flights of the utility transport aircraft Su-80GP and the agricultural Su-38L plane.
In 1966 “The State Experimental Plant #51 MAP” received a new name – “The Moscow Machine-Building Plant “Kulon” (MP “Kulon”). In July 1976 Design Bureau and the plant was named P.O. Sukhoi. In August 1992, the plant was renamed as The Aircraft Research Complex “OKB Sukhoi” (ASPC “OKB Sukhoi”). After privatization in 1996 it began to be called SCOT “Sukhoi OKB”.
In September 2003 SUE “Aircraft military complex “Sukhoi” has been upgraded to the JSC “Aviation Holding Company “Sukhoi” (where 100% of the shares of a company owned by the RF). 100% of the shares of “Sukhoi Company” (JSC) were transferred under Presidential Decree RF dated 20 February 2006 #140 to the authorized capital of JSC “United Aircraft Corporation”.
For more than 75-year history of Sukhoi Design Bureau it was created some 100 types of aircraft and their modifications with more than 60 types serially produced. The total number of series-produced aircraft exceeds 10 000. Over 2 000 of them have delivered to 30 countries around the world. More than 50 world records are established at planes “Su”.
Among the most prominent recent developments of Sukhoi Design Bureau is all-weather front bomber Su-24 with a variable swept-wing and armored subsonic attack aircraft Su-25, became the first mass produced domestic military aircraft of this type, one of the best fighters in its class;
One of the most world-known developments and the best fighters in its class has become Su-27 (known abroad as Flanker) unique military aircraft for a number of characteristics as well as its modifies like Su-30, Su-32, Su-33 and Su-34.
The aircraft-building experience gained by the Design Bureau's team over many decades made it possible to produce a family of aerobatic aeroplanes, the Su-26, Su-29, and Su-31. With these machines, the national aerobatics team of the USSR and RF have won a total of 330 medals (156 gold medals) at the World and European Championships.
At the beginning of the 1990-s, the Sukhoi Design Bureau initiated work on civil projects. The year 2001 saw the first flights of the utility transport aircraft Su-80GP and the agricultural Su-38L plane. Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (CJSC) is currently engaged in developing a family of regional SSJ planes including Sukhoi Superjet 100.
